Failure is An Option
Failure is an Option, Roswell Museum and Art Center, 2017
This exhibition is in part a tribute to twentieth century modernism, which came to a climax in the 1970’s and then was pronounced a grand failure for its lack of cultural inclusion and more. Was the Twentieth Century so bad that we need to dismantle every aspect of our inheritance? I like Minimalism, Constructiism, and Dada, I even like Slacker Dada. It is wonderful that we can have and make art that is not bound to an imagistic mysticism but rather meaning bound to the actual. When creating the world anew, I’d take a functioning actual over alternative facts and myth any day. Modernism put forth that there is something more to art then just the presence of absence, “Let be be finale of seem”, as Wallace Stevens wrote. The real is always bound to failure, that’s where hope is found and life springs eternal.
